The dramatic growth of Northern Rock has led to the expansion of their head offices in Gosforth designed by architects Red Box.
A commitment to engage with a range of artists was taken early in the design process and five artists were selected from an invited design competition to produce contemporary works for the new office environment.
Sue Woolhouse used a variety of glass techniques including casting, photo silk-screening, acid etching, sandblasting, enamel painting and leading to create a stunning glass light box which describes Northern Rock's history by mixing new regional icons like the Gateshead Millennium Bridge with Tyneside's historical landmarks.
"The opportunity to buy our own homes is embodied in Northern Rock's history. I have used specific buildings to illustrate where some of the first meetings were held to pursue this intention, the Royal Arcade being one such building.
The North East has been at the forefront of invention, Swan's invention of the incandescent light leading to Newcastle being the first city in Britain to be illuminated by electric light as well as Stephenson's engineering involvement in the development of the High Level Bridge, the miners safety lamp and the Railway. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge continues this proud tradition. These are all themes which I have considered in creating this commission for Northern Rock."
