Dating back to 1876, Saltwell Park was designed to provide a haven of peace and tranquillity for the working people of Gateshead, somewhere they could enjoy their precious leisure hours away from the heavy industry that provided their livelihood.
The five year restoration of the park, backed by one of the biggest Heritage Lottery Fund grants ever to be awarded in the North East, saw the landscape being transformed back to its former Victorian glory.
As part of the refurbishment artist Bridget Jones was commissioned to create a modern, glass-panelled stairway to set off the new contemporary interior of Saltwell Park Tower.
