Two subways in the centre of Gateshead were redesigned and restored using digital images of local people printed on ceramic tiles. The Orpheus Subway incorporates surface treatments and sequenced lighting to enhance the design. During the planning stages of the project the artist worked with local people, who featured as characters in the final designs.
The artwork was the result of a collaboration between the artist and engineers in the Highways and Construction Section, Gateshead Council.
