This New Writing North led project aimed to engage local people with the transformation of the former Hawthorn Colliery and Cokeworks site into parkland for community use
Poet Linda France developed a year-long project which involved her working with residents and school children from the villages of Murton and South Hetton to encourage them to write creatively in response to the Hawthorn site. As the project developed, a theme emerged, which was about the elements: fire, earth, water, air, plus metal and wood.
A selection of the poetry written by local people features on a series of striking steel sculptures designed by William Pym, which each reflect one of the elements. The sculptures will be sited on the new parkland between Murton and South Hetton. An anthology featuring a selection of writing from Linda France and project participants was also published to accompany the launch of the sculptures.
