Sunderland arc was established in May 2002 to fulfil the aspirations of the Government's Urban Task Force and promote urban renaissance. The arc's masterplan for the former Vaux Brewery site, set dramatically above the River Wear on the northern edge of Sunderland City Centre is designed to bring the City back to the river and the river back to the City. Sunderland arc embarked on a programme of challenging temporary art interventions to excite and engage people at the earliest stages of the long term development programme.
'Cargo' was a temporary projection installation on the Farringdon Row site that take transport and the exchange of ‘commodities’ as its main theme. Cargo highlights Sunderland’s past as a thriving port, using modified shipping containers as temporary exhibition spaces for multimedia projections, soundworks, light shows and the display of physical objects.
