The Newbiggin Breakwater is an £11m sea defence scheme for Newbiggin by the Sea funded by DEFRA and Wansbeck District Council. Completed in 2007, the scheme consists of a 200 metre-long island of Coreloc blocks constructed 350 metres out into the bay. The breakwater scheme is believed to be the first of its kind to be initiated along the North East coastline.
'Couple', the UK's first permanent offshore sculpture, measuring 12 metres high and 18 metres long is sited on the new breakwater.
