Due for completion in 2008, the 'Unity sphere' was designed to be a striking landmark on the roof line of St Peter's Square in Thornaby. The sculpture symbolises the reunification of Thornaby's community through the regeneration of the town centre. It also pays tribute to Thornaby's heritage in iron and steel, and to the town's motto: 'Always Advancing'.
The artwork is comprised of a complex network of triangular forms that respond to each other, creating a visual rhythm. Each triangle is made from high-grade stainless steel which when blown creates gaps between the triangles which will allow light to pass through the sculpture, bouncing light off one another, making the most of any natural light.
