Cragside was the revolutionary home of 19th Century inventor and industrialist Lord Armstrong. The house and estate is now the National Trust's flagship property in the North East, attracting over 160,000 visitors a year.
The 'Inside Out' programme was commissioned for summer 2006 to provide an opportunity for visitors to have an alternative experience of Cragside while the house was closed for rewiring. Six artists were commissioned to create temporary works for sites across the gardens and estate.
For his installation Matthew Walmsley created a replica of the Cragside billiard room within the estate's thatched boathouse. A new floor was laid, walls were panelled and a full size snooker table placed where formally boats were moored.
