Cragside was the revolutionary home of 19th Century inventor and industrialist Lord Armstrong. The house and estate is now the National Trust's flagship property in the North East, attracting over 160,000 visitors a year.
The 'Inside Out' programme was commissioned for summer 2006 to provide an opportunity for visitors to have an alternative experience of Cragside while the house was closed for rewiring. Six artists were commissioned to create temporary works for sites across the gardens and estate.
Clare Morgan's 'Water on the Brain' is created from 5,300 origami paper boats coated with yacht varnish and suspended on 10km of fishing line from a steel supporting structure, installed in the spillway from one of Cragside's lakes. the floating form represents a gunboat designed by Armstrong's company.
