Within the Heritage Lottery funded restoration of Mowbray Park, Sunderland's Public Art Programme was able to advocate a role for contemporary artists and designers to create a series of new features. These included poetry and letter cutting by writer Linda France and artist Alec Peever, and sculpture by Andrew Burton, Richard Caink and Roger Dickinson.
In addition to the artworks in the park, major new commissions by William Pye, Fusion Glass and Wendy Ramshaw OBE, were delivered through the rebuilding of the adjacent Winter Gardens.
