Artist Simon Watkinson worked with restoration experts Classic Masonry to cast the head of Earl Grey which sits at the top of Grey's Monument in the centre of Newcastle. The cast was digitally scanned and laser carved from solid acrylic blocks. The four resulting 'headcubes' are sunk and lit within the Monument's plinth. The work is inspired by a local story of a dramatic lightening strike in 1941, which toppled the statue's head.
