Sunniside Gardens originally known as The Shrubbery was laid out by William Jameson in 1814, In 2001 Sunderland City Council was successful in attracting a Heritage Lottery Fund grant towards a Townscape Heritage Initiative for the Sunniside area of Sunderland city centre. As part of the ongoing regeneration glass specialist Laura Johnston was commissioned to create a centrepiece for Sunniside Gardens.
The artwork is shaped like the hull of a ship to celebrate the history of the regenerated area, Sunderland's old heart, where the shipyard owners used to live. The tallest arc stretches 23ft into the air and the glass ribs change colour with the weather or when they are looked at from different angles.
