Sunniside Gardens, originally known as The Shrubbery, was laid out by William Jameson in 1814. In 2001 Sunderland City Council was successful in attracting a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to rejuvenate Sunniside.
As part of this ongoing regeneration glass specialist Laura Johnston was commissioned to create a centrepiece for Sunniside Gardens. The artwork is shaped like the hull of a ship to celebrate the old heart of the City, where the shipyard owners used to live. The tallest arc stretches 23ft into the air.
